These structural arms project over the side of the hull to suspend lifeboats, rescue craft, or anchors. They operate in pairs using a system of falls and winches to safely deploy boats down the side of the ship to the water level. The mechanism must function even if the ship loses power or takes on a severe list during an emergency.

Insider tip
Routine maintenance on the winch brakes and release hooks is critical, as a jammed mechanism will trap a lifeboat on deck.
