Fall home

verbStandard termMaritime

To curve inward toward the centerline at the upper sections of a ship's hull.

The inward curvature of a vessel's topsides above the waterline, causing the deck to be narrower than the maximum beam. This design feature lowers the center of gravity of the upper works and prevents the upper decks from catching on wharves or other ships during boarding. It is the opposite of flare, and is closely associated with the structural concept of tumblehome.

Heard on the job

The sides fall home significantly above the main deck, giving her that classic tumblehome profile.
