Bug juice

nounShop talkMaritime

A brightly colored, highly sweetened powdered drink served on naval vessels.

A synthetic, fruit-flavored beverage mixed from bulk powder and water, served heavily in the mess decks of naval ships. It provides a cheap, shelf-stable alternative to fresh juice for crews on long deployments. The acidity and chemical makeup of the powder are famously strong enough that sailors sometimes use it as a makeshift brass polish or deck cleaner.

Heard on the job

Grab a pitcher of bug juice for the table before the mess line gets too long.

If it cleans the tarnish off a brass belt buckle, imagine what it does to your stomach lining.
