Left-handed screwdriver

nounShop talkMachine Shop

A tool that does not exist, which new apprentices are sent to fetch as a rite of initiation.

The classic fool's errand played on rookies, along with the board stretcher, a can of striped paint, a bucket of steam, a sky hook and a metric crescent wrench. The newcomer is sent from bench to bench while everyone keeps a straight face. Being sent for one is part of joining the crew; refusing to go with a grin earns respect too.

Heard on the job

Send the new guy to stores for a left-handed screwdriver and a bucket of steam, see how long it takes him.

Insider tip

Play along with a grin; the apprentice who laughs it off tends to get taught the good stuff sooner.
