Machine taper

nounStandard termMachine Shop

A conical mounting system that aligns and grips cutting tools in a machine spindle.

A standardized conical interface used to secure toolholders or cutting tools directly into a machine spindle. The wedge action of the matching angles provides both precise concentric alignment and massive friction to transmit torque. They rely on clean, matching surfaces to lock solid and release with a deliberate knock or drawbar mechanism.

Make sure the machine taper is completely wiped down before you seat that new holder.
