Unbuttressed

adjectiveStandard termForestry

A tree trunk that meets the ground straight down without flaring out at the base.

Describing a tree stem that lacks the wide, supportive root flares common in many tropical or wetland species. Unbuttressed trees have a relatively uniform cylindrical shape right down to the soil line. This makes felling simpler because the logger does not have to cut through massive, irregular flanges to reach the main hinge wood.

Heard on the job

The pines on this ridge are completely unbuttressed, making it easy to keep the stump heights low.
