Doghair

nounShop talkForestry

An overly dense stand of stunted, small-diameter coniferous trees.

A thick, unthinned forest stand where natural regeneration has produced far too many stems per acre. Because the trees compete fiercely for limited light, water, and nutrients, they become severely stunted, remaining thin and whippy even after decades. These stands have almost no commercial timber value and are difficult to walk through.

Heard on the job

I tried to run a cruise line through that lodgepole pine, but it's absolute doghair in there.

Insider tip

Doghair stands are prime candidates for mechanical pre-commercial thinning or prescribed burns to release the remaining trees and reduce fuel loads.
