A continuous perimeter cleared of combustible vegetation down to mineral soil, constructed by hand crews, bulldozers, or plows. It serves as a barrier to halt the advance of a wildfire. The line is only considered secure once the fire edge inside it has cooled and all spot fires outside it have been extinguished.
