Hop garden

nounStandard termFarming

A specialized agricultural field equipped with tall trellises for growing hops.

These permanent installations feature a grid of heavy poles and high-tensile wire situated 15 to 20 feet above the ground. Growers train the climbing bines up heavy coir strings dropped from the wire canopy. The term is predominantly used in British farming, whereas North American growers typically use different terminology for the same infrastructure.

Heard on the job

The windstorm snapped three perimeter poles in the lower hop garden, so grab the auger and the wire tensioners.
