Paddy field

nounStandard termFarming

A flooded parcel of arable land used for growing semi-aquatic crops like rice.

A specially constructed, bunded field designed to hold shallow water for cultivating rice and occasionally other aquatic crops like taro. The flooded environment suppresses terrestrial weeds and provides the high moisture levels these crops require. Maintaining the water level requires precise grading, heavy clay subsoils to prevent drainage, and a reliable irrigation network.
