Outrun

nounStandard termFarming

A piece of outlying, uncultivated grazing land attached to an arable farm.

This rough pasture is typically located on the margins of the property, often on steep, rocky, or poorly drained terrain unsuitable for the plow. Farmers use it to support hardy livestock like sheep or dry cows during the summer months, keeping the prime arable land free for cash crops or winter fodder production.

Heard on the job

We'll push the yearling heifers up to the outrun for the summer and save the bottom pastures for making hay.
