Gangway

nounStandard termFarming

A sloped access ramp leading directly into the upper level of a traditional bank barn.

This elevated driveway allows wagons and tractors to drive straight into the haymow or upper storage floor of a multi-level barn. It is typically constructed from built-up earth and reinforced with stone or heavy timber planks. By providing direct access to the upper storey, it eliminates the need to hoist heavy loads of loose hay or grain from the ground floor.

Heard on the job

Back the hay wagon up the gangway carefully, the planks get slick when they're wet.
