Ringing out means testing each conductor of a multicore cable for continuity and correct identification between its two ends with a continuity tester or meter, the name coming from the bell-and-battery tester that does the same job. One end of a core is linked to earth or a reference core and the other end is probed until it is found. It catches crossed cores, broken conductors and wrong numbering before anything is energised.
Ring out the 24-core from the field box to the marshalling panel, half the ferrules on this job are on the wrong cores.
