SCADA, supervisory control and data acquisition, links remote terminal units and substation gateways to a control centre over radio, fibre or leased lines, polling status, alarms and analog values and sending commands such as open, close and tap raise. Protocols such as DNP3 and IEC 60870-5-104 carry the data, and an energy management system adds load flow and contingency analysis on top. When SCADA to a site is lost, operators are blind and must send someone to switch locally.
Lost SCADA to Kingsway sub, no indications at all, send the on-call operator out to take local control.
