Salient pole

nounStandard termElectrotechnology

A magnetic pole that physically sticks out from the rotor core of an electric machine.

A rotor design in synchronous motors and generators where the magnetic poles are distinct, protruding structures wrapped with field coils. This design is highly effective for low-speed machines with many poles, such as hydroelectric generators. The uneven air gap creates a reluctance torque that helps pull the machine into synchronism.

Heard on the job

The hydro plant uses a massive salient pole rotor because it only spins at 120 RPM.
