Series-wound

adjectiveStandard termElectrotechnology

Describes a motor or generator where the field coils are wired in series with the armature.

A machine configuration where the entire load current passes through both the rotating armature and the stationary field windings. This setup gives motors massive starting torque, making them ideal for heavy traction applications like trains and cranes. However, if the mechanical load is lost, a series-wound motor will accelerate dangerously until it destroys itself.

Heard on the job

We use a series-wound motor for the hoist because we need maximum torque right off the line.
