A set-screw fitting holds EMT with one or more screws that bite into the tubing wall, while its alternative, the compression fitting, squeezes a split ring onto the tube with a gland nut. Set-screw fittings are quick, cheap and acceptable in dry locations, but wet locations and concrete encasement call for compression or other listed raintight or concrete-tight fittings. Specifications often name one type or the other for the whole job.
