A goof ring is a box extender, metal or plastic, used when a box ends up recessed behind the finished wall because of thick paneling, tile or a rough-in mistake. It screws through the device holes and carries the box walls forward so there is no gap at combustible material and the device mounts solidly. Code requires boxes in combustible walls to be flush and those in noncombustible walls to be set back no more than 1/4 inch, so the ring fixes a real violation, not just looks.
Tile guy put an inch of backer and tile on that wall and buried every box, go get a bag of goof rings.
