Torching is a traditional roofing method where lime hair mortar is applied to the underside of slates or tiles between the battens. This interior pointing prevents wind-driven rain and snow from penetrating the roof space. While largely replaced by synthetic roofing membranes, it remains relevant in heritage restoration and conservation work.
