Ridge vent

nounStandard termBuilding

An exhaust vent installed along the peak of a sloped roof to release hot air.

A continuous exhaust vent placed along the apex of a pitched roof, covered by the ridge course or ridge tiles. It works in tandem with soffit vents to create passive airflow, drawing cool air in at the bottom and pushing hot, moist attic air out at the top.

Heard on the job

Make sure to cut the roof decking back two inches on each side of the peak for the ridge vent.

Insider tip

If you install a ridge vent, you must have adequate soffit intake vents, or the system will draw weather in through the ridge.
