Punch list

nounStandard termBuilding

A master document tracking minor defects and incomplete tasks that a contractor must fix before final payment.

A comprehensive checklist of remaining work items, missing trim, paint touch-ups, or minor defects identified near the end of a construction project. The architect, owner, and general contractor usually walk the site together to generate this document. The contractor must complete every item on the list to transition the project from practical completion to final completion and release the final payment.

Heard on the job

The drywallers are coming back tomorrow to knock out the last five items on the punch list.

Insider tip

A good superintendent tries to achieve a zero-item punch list by doing their own aggressive quality walks before the architect ever sees the space.
