Blanket insulation

nounStandard termBuilding

A continuous roll of compressible fibrous material used to slow heat transfer between framing members.

This thermal barrier consists of spun glass fibers, mineral wool, or natural fibers formed into long, continuous rolls. Installers cut the material to length and friction-fit or staple it into wall cavities, floor joists, and attic spaces. The continuous roll format reduces gaps and seams compared to pre-cut pieces, providing a more consistent thermal break.

Insider tip

Keep it fluffy during installation, because compressing the fibers squeezes out the trapped air that actually provides the thermal resistance.
