A specialized material or system used to seal openings and prevent the spread of fire.

A passive fire protection system installed in concealed spaces, expansion joints, or penetrations where pipes and wires pass through fire-rated walls and floors. It relies on intumescent materials, fire-rated caulks, or mineral wool to expand and block flames, heat, and smoke during a building fire.

The inspector failed the rough-in because the plumbers forgot to put firestop around the PVC penetrations in the demising wall.
