Bellyscraper

nounShop talkBuilding

A large piece of earthmoving machinery that scrapes, loads, and transports soil in a central hopper.

This heavy machine features a vertically adjustable blade positioned under the chassis and ahead of a large central bowl. As the operator drives forward, the blade cuts into the soil, forcing the dirt up and into the hopper. Once the bowl is full, the operator raises the blade and drives the load to a fill area, where the machine ejects and spreads the material in an even layer. Site crews rely on it for rapid cut-and-fill operations on large tracts of land.

Heard on the job

Get the bellyscraper over to the south lot so we can start knocking down those high spots before the rain hits.

Insider tip

Rookies often try to cut too deep on the first pass, which bogs down the machine and spins the tires.
