nounStandard termBrewing

A small brewery cask holding 4.5 Imperial gallons, equal to half a firkin.

A small traditional brewery cask holding exactly 4.5 Imperial gallons or 36 pints. It represents half the volume of a firkin and one-eighth of a standard UK brewer's barrel. Brewers use this smaller size for specialty runs, low-turnover real ales, or private events where a larger cask would spoil before being emptied.
