Slingload

nounStandard termAviation

Cargo suspended below a helicopter by cables or nets during flight.

A slingload is an external payload carried underneath a rotary-wing aircraft using a cargo hook and rigging lines. This method allows helicopters to transport oversized equipment, vehicles, or supplies that cannot fit inside the cabin, and deliver them to austere locations without landing. Pilots must carefully manage airspeed and control inputs to prevent the pendulum effect from destabilizing the aircraft.
