Sonic boom

nounStandard termAviation

The loud noise caused by the shock wave of an aircraft traveling faster than the speed of sound.

The acoustic signature of a shock wave generated when an aircraft exceeds the speed of sound. As the vehicle pushes through the air supersonically, pressure waves merge into a single shock wave that trails behind it in a cone shape. To observers on the ground, this sudden change in pressure sounds like a massive explosion or thunderclap.

Heard on the job

ATC is restricting supersonic passes over the populated areas to avoid noise complaints from the sonic boom.
