To intentionally disrupt the smooth aerodynamic airflow over an airfoil, forcing a reduction in lift and an increase in drag. Pilots spoil lift during descent to increase the sink rate without gaining airspeed, or immediately upon touchdown to transfer the aircraft's weight to the landing gear for effective braking.
