Longline

nounStandard termAviation

A heavy-duty cable suspended from a helicopter to carry external loads.

Pilots use this extended tether to transport cargo, equipment, or water buckets to areas where the helicopter cannot physically land. The line typically ranges from 50 to 200 feet, keeping the rotor wash clear of ground personnel and obstacles. Flying with an external load requires precise collective control and vertical reference flying techniques.
