SAS

abbreviationStandard termAviation

The stability augmentation system that automatically dampens unwanted aircraft motions.

SAS stands for stability augmentation system, a flight control component used primarily in helicopters and high-performance jets. It uses rate gyros to detect uncommanded pitch, roll, or yaw, and sends quick, small corrective signals to the flight control actuators. This reduces pilot workload by smoothing out turbulence and dampening aerodynamic instabilities without flying the aircraft for the pilot.

Heard on the job

I'm getting uncommanded yaw kicks, looks like we lost the yaw SAS channel.
