Skirt finger

nounStandard termAviation

A flexible, replaceable segment attached to the lower edge of a hovercraft's main skirt.

Skirt fingers are individual rubber or urethane tubes that hang down from the main bag of an air cushion vehicle to seal the gap between the hull and the ground. They drag directly over the terrain or water surface, taking the brunt of the wear and tear. Because they are individual segments, a damaged finger can be unbolted and replaced without having to change the entire skirt system.

Heard on the job

We tore three skirt fingers crossing that ice ridge and lost a lot of cushion pressure.
