Roundel

nounStandard termAviation

A circular painted insignia used on military aircraft to identify their national air force.

A roundel is a geometric emblem applied to the fuselage and wings of military aircraft to mark national allegiance. Developed to prevent friendly fire during aerial combat, these markings usually feature concentric circles in the colours of the country's flag. Though low-visibility grey versions are common on combat jets, the classic bright designs remain standard on transport and training fleets.

Heard on the job

Check the port wing, the paint on the roundel is peeling and needs a touch-up before the airshow.

Insider tip

Ground crews often refer to the subdued grey versions on stealth aircraft as lo-vis roundels.
