Sears-Haack body

nounStandard termAviation

An aerodynamic shape mathematically optimized to produce the lowest possible wave drag at supersonic speeds.

The Sears-Haack body is a theoretical, cigar-like profile that minimizes the shockwave drag of an object moving faster than the speed of sound, assuming a fixed length and volume. It features a pointed nose and tail with a smooth, continuous curve in between. Aerospace engineers use this idealized shape as a baseline when designing supersonic fuselages, external fuel tanks, and missiles.

Heard on the job

If you look at the drop tanks on the fighter, they're contoured almost exactly like a Sears-Haack body to cut down on supersonic drag.
