Canuck

nounShop talkAviation

The nickname for the Avro Canada CF-100 fighter-interceptor.

This twin-engine jet was the only Canadian-designed fighter to enter mass production. Crews and mechanics gave it this nickname to celebrate its domestic origin, though official records often just used the model number. It served as an all-weather interceptor during the Cold War era.

Heard on the job

We need to pull the starboard engine on that Canuck before the afternoon sortie.

Insider tip

While officially named the Canuck, many pilots affectionately called it the Clunk due to the heavy noise its landing gear made when retracting.
