Centre of lift

nounStandard termAviation

The theoretical point on an airframe where the sum total of all aerodynamic lifting forces acts.

The centre of lift is the focal point of aerodynamic pressure generated by the wings and control surfaces. For an aircraft to be stable, this point must be carefully balanced relative to the centre of gravity. If it shifts too far forward or aft during flight, the aircraft will pitch uncontrollably, making it dangerous or impossible to fly.

Heard on the job

Adding those external tanks moved the centre of lift too far forward, making the pitch response sluggish.
