Headlight fluid

nounShop talkAutomotive

A fictional automotive liquid used exclusively to prank gullible apprentices or customers.

A nonexistent product that mechanics and veterans tell rookies to fetch from the parts room. It serves as a harmless hazing ritual to test a newcomer's basic mechanical knowledge. If someone actually starts looking for it, the shop knows they have zero prior experience.

Heard on the job

Go down to the parts department and ask Jim for a quart of halogen headlight fluid.

Insider tip

The classic counter-prank is to return with a bottle of water labeled with masking tape.
