Odometer fraud

nounStandard termAutomotive

The illegal alteration of a vehicle's mileage reading to artificially inflate its resale value.

Odometer fraud involves rolling back a mechanical odometer or hacking a digital instrument cluster to display fewer miles than the vehicle has actually traveled. This deceptive practice masks severe wear and tear on the drivetrain and suspension, tricking buyers into paying a premium for a high-mileage car. Technicians often spot it by checking the vehicle's service history, wear on the brake pedal, or mileage discrepancies stored in secondary control modules.

Heard on the job

The dash says 40,000 miles, but the wear on the steering wheel and pedals screams odometer fraud.
