Extractors

nounShop talkAutomotive

Performance exhaust manifolds designed to improve exhaust gas scavenging.

Extractors are aftermarket or performance-oriented tubular exhaust manifolds. They are engineered with specific pipe lengths and diameters to create a scavenging effect, where the exhaust pulse from one cylinder helps pull the exhaust gases out of another. This reduces backpressure and increases engine power output.

Heard on the job

We bolted a set of long-tube extractors onto the V8 to help it breathe better at high RPMs.

Insider tip

In Australian and New Zealand car culture, extractors is the standard term for what Americans call headers.
