A system that mechanically forces compressed air into the engine's cylinders at pressures higher than atmospheric pressure. By packing more oxygen into the combustion chamber, the engine can burn more fuel per cycle, drastically increasing horsepower and torque without increasing engine displacement. Turbochargers and superchargers are the two primary mechanisms used.
We need to lower the compression ratio before adding forced induction, or it'll detonate under boost.
Related terms

A mechanically driven air compressor that forces extra air into an engine.
Boost
The positive air pressure created in the intake manifold by a forced induction system.
Wastegate
A pneumatic or electronic valve that limits turbocharger boost pressure by bypassing exhaust gases.
Intercooler
A heat exchanger used to cool compressed air from a turbocharger or supercharger before it enters the engine.
