Fuel filter

nounStandard termAutomotive

A replaceable element in the fuel line that removes dirt and contaminants before they reach the engine.

A filtration device placed in the fuel delivery system to catch rust, dirt, and debris suspended in the fuel. By trapping these particles, it prevents clogged fuel injectors or carburetor jets, ensuring proper fuel atomization and protecting high-pressure fuel pumps from abrasive damage.

Heard on the job

We need to swap out the inline fuel filter, it's completely packed with rust from that old gas tank.

Insider tip

Many newer vehicles no longer have replaceable inline fuel filters, relying instead on a non-serviceable sock filter attached directly to the fuel pump inside the tank.
