Bumper

nounStandard termAutomotive

A structure attached to the front and rear of a vehicle to absorb low-speed impacts.

The bumper is the foremost and rearmost structural component of a vehicle chassis, designed to absorb energy during low-speed collisions. Older vehicles used exposed steel bars, while newer designs feature a hidden structural beam covered by a flexible plastic fascia. This assembly minimizes damage to expensive body panels, cooling systems, and safety equipment.

Heard on the job

The core support is fine but we need to order a new front bumper cover and energy absorber.

Insider tip

Insurance adjusters look closely at the bumper reinforcement bar behind the plastic cover, as a bent bar means the vehicle absorbed a significant hit.
