Barn find

nounShop talkAutomotive

A vehicle discovered in long-term storage that is often covered in dust and sold in as-is condition.

A classic or neglected car pulled from decades of storage, usually covered in dust and untouched by recent mechanics. While originally referring to rare vintage vehicles literally found in barns, sellers frequently abuse the phrase to market ordinary, poorly maintained cars sitting in driveways. Buyers look for these untouched projects hoping to uncover a hidden gem rather than a rust bucket.

Heard on the job

He wants ten grand for a rusted-out shell just because he dragged it out of a shed and called it a barn find.

Insider tip

True barn finds require careful revival; attempting to start an engine that has sat for decades without pulling the plugs and lubricating the cylinders will often destroy it.
