Sprue

Sprue turns up in 2 fields: logistics, metallurgy. Here is what it means to the people in each one.

Trucking, Transit & Logistics

Sprue in logistics

A maneuver where a driver pulls completely through a parking space to face outward in the adjacent spot.

Pulling through an empty parking bay into the one directly ahead of it so the vehicle faces the aisle. Drivers perform this maneuver to avoid backing out later when leaving the spot. It is highly preferred in trucking and fleet operations because it eliminates blind spots associated with reversing into active traffic lanes.

"I got lucky at the truck stop and was able to sprue right into a spot near the fuel islands."

Metallurgy, Foundry & Forge

Sprue in metallurgy

The vertical channel through which molten metal enters a mould.

The primary vertical passage cut or formed in the sand that carries liquid metal from the pouring basin down into the runner system. After the casting solidifies, the metal that freezes inside this channel is also called the sprue, which must be cut off and recycled.

"Keep the ladle low and choke the sprue so we don't suck air into the runner."
