Sheet
Sheet turns up in 2 fields: paper optics, hydrography. Here is what it means to the people in each one.
Sheet in paper optics
Papermakers' word for the continuous paper web on the machine, and for the grade as a product.
Mill crews rarely say web: the paper running on the machine is the sheet, as in sheet break, sheet moisture or the sheet is two-sided. It also means the grade as a whole, so a printer complaint about the sheet concerns the paper, not one cut piece. Only in the finishing room and at the customer does sheet go back to meaning a single cut piece.
"Sheet is running wet on the back side, bump the steam on the last dryer section."
Sheet in hydrography
Crew shorthand for one registered survey area and its data set, worked and reported as a single unit.
One survey project area with its own registry number, limits and deliverables, treated as a single unit from planning to final report. The name comes from the smooth sheet, the large fair plot of a survey's soundings, and crews talk about sheet limits, closing out a sheet and which sheet a launch is working. A ship's field season often covers several sheets in the same region.
"Launch 2 is finishing the inshore holidays on the north sheet, then moves to the new sheet Thursday."
