Green

Green turns up in 2 fields: refractories, gears. Here is what it means to the people in each one.

Refractories & Furnace Linings

Green in refractories

Describes refractory that has been formed or placed but not yet fired, dried or heated in service.

Describes a brick after pressing but before firing, or a monolithic lining after placing and curing but before its first heat-up. Green material holds its shape through green strength from binders, cement hydrates or moisture, but has not developed its fired bond. Green linings are vulnerable to freezing, rain, impact and fast heating.

"Lining is still green, nobody stands on that floor or runs a forklift over it until after the dry-out."

Gear Engineering

Green in gears

Shop word for a gear in its soft, machined state before heat treatment, as in cut green, finish hard.

Describes gear blanks and teeth machined before hardening, when the steel is easy to cut. Green cutting by hobbing or shaping leaves grinding stock for after heat treat, or, for gears not ground, produces the final geometry with an allowance for expected distortion. Green dimensions are recorded so heat treat growth can be tracked lot to lot.

"Measure them green, over pins, before they go to carburize, so we can see how much they grow in the furnace."
