Matchboard

nounStandard termWoodworking

A wooden board milled with a tongue on one edge and a groove on the other.

A type of lumber profiled so that adjacent boards interlock edge-to-edge. One edge features a protruding tongue while the opposite edge has a matching groove. This profile allows the boards to slide together, creating a flat, continuous surface that hides nails and resists dust or drafts.

Heard on the job

We need another bundle of matchboard to finish the wainscoting in the hallway.

Insider tip

When installing matchboard, always drive the blind nails through the tongue rather than the groove to prevent splitting.
