Hook pin

nounStandard termWoodworking

A tapered metal spike with a curved head used to temporarily align heavy timber joints.

A heavy steel drift pin used by timber framers to pull mortise and tenon joints tight before final pegging. The tapered shaft is driven into the offset peg holes of a draw-bored joint, forcing the timbers together. The hooked head provides a striking surface for a hammer to knock the pin back out once the joint is seated and ready for a permanent wooden peg.

Heard on the job

Drive a hook pin into that top plate to hold the joint tight while I get the oak pegs ready.
