Compass plane

nounStandard termWoodworking

A specialized hand plane with an adjustable flexible sole used for smoothing curved surfaces.

The sole of this plane is made from a flexible steel plate controlled by a central adjustment mechanism. The user can bend the sole into a convex or concave arc to match the exact radius of a curved workpiece. It allows woodworkers to smooth arches, curved chair parts, and circular table rims where a flat plane would dig in or bridge across the curve.
