Mock-up

nounStandard termWaterproofing

A full-size sample of a wall, window or joint assembly built and tested before the real work starts.

Visual mock-ups settle color, texture and appearance; performance mock-ups are built in a lab or on site and tested for air leakage, water penetration and structural load. Sealant mock-ups on the real substrates also host adhesion pull tests and stain checks. Approved mock-ups become the standard for the job, and problems found there are cheap to fix.

Heard on the job

Mock-up failed water at 12 psf at the sill corner, fix the end dams before they start production.

Insider tip

A mock-up built by the foreman's best hands instead of the production crew proves little about the real work.
