Percher

nounStandard termTextiles

A quality control worker who inspects fabric for defects before finishing.

A percher is a specialized inspector in a textile mill responsible for visually examining yardage as it passes over an illuminated inspection frame. They look for structural flaws like mispicks, dropped stitches, or dye spots, marking the defects with chalk or tagging threads. Their assessment determines the grade of the cloth and dictates whether a roll needs mending or must be downgraded to seconds.

Heard on the job

The percher flagged three major mispicks in the first fifty yards of this roll.
